Victoria Beckham - Tailoring Queen
It is very rare that I am available to see a runway live, and I don't mean in person, I mean on
Instagram. However on Sunday morning I got the notification that
Victoria Beckham had gone live and I knew it could only be for one thing, her runway!
London Fashion Week is basically the only time I am fortunate enough to be around to watch some shows as a lot of the shows happen over the weekend and it is on my time zone so it all sort of comes together and I have to say it is amazing to be able to watch the show.
When you watch the show rather than looking at the pictures you really get to see the details within the movements of the garments, you get to see the back of the outfits and you get to hear the music that has been chosen to go with the collection. It was a joy to watch the runway and it has given me a chance to gather more thoughts on the runway.
Autumn/Winter 2020
After 10 years, Victoria Beckham has certainly found her feet in the fashion industry. No longer is she a newcomer with no defined style, instead she has managed to refine a look that certainly works for her brand. No longer is she the queen of evening wear for the reality stars, instead she is a tailoring queen with a classic British countryside feel.
It took a while for this style to come out within the show this season as it started off with an all black, almost gothic feel to the show. When the show first started I thought we were going to see Victoria Beckham completely change it up but thankfully we saw her signature style start to come through during the middle of the show. These initial outfits weren't my favourite to be honest but I did love the neckline on one of the dresses, it felt very
Versace or
Saint Laurent from last season but a little bit more subtle, more demur.
After a quick music change to something a little bit softer, then the classic VB style came out and as always I loved it. She took the elements she is know for such as tailoring, prints, knitwear and pleated skirts but played around with it so it still felt fresh. My favourite change this season was the inclusion of the wider check print, gone is the heritage check and in comes the wider more lumberjack feeling check which I thought was great. I also loved how this print was used in a more tradition styled piece so it feels more casual but still put together.
Some of my favourite outfits from the show incorporated some of Victoria's stunning knitwear and one of my favourite pieces from the entire show was a knit dress with cut outs around the hem. It was a very ladylike way of including the cutout trend without stepping away from her classic brand. The way the dress hugged the body without being too clingy was gorgeous and the fact that it is all Navy is just a winner for me. The only way to top of this look was with a burgundy jacket and that was what the model carried in her hand. This entire look was genius.
VB definitely brings some of the strongest tailoring to LFW and that was definitely shown through some of the stunning outerwear this season. The coats are stunning with larger shoulders and a fierce structure which just adds instant power to any outfit. I love the way the coats have been cut and how most of them are grey which makes them an instant staple in anyone's wardrobe.
There were some elements of the show that I really did not like and this season it was the accessories. Normally I am quite the fan of the shoes that VB puts on the runway, I still think of those
peep toe thigh high sock boots from A/W19 to this day but this seasons boot was not for me. The boot style felt very 60s with a massive platform and the majority of them being made of either leather or PVC. Whatever they were made from it was very high shine and I can't say I liked them. They looked slightly clunky and for the most part it seemed like some of the models struggled to walk in them.
In addition to the boots, there was a belt which kept coming up throughout the show, this belt transcended the different looks but I just didn't like it. I like that it was a bigger belt without being over the top and I adore that it took us away from the obvious branding on belts that has been trendy for the past few years but I simply did not like the design. It had two hands holding the belt together with a leather band working as the rest of the belt. I thought the deep brown, almost burgundy colour of the belt was beautiful but it was just the hands that lost me a little.
Based on This Runway, What Should You Add to Your A/W Wardrobe?
Always Knitwear - Everyone knows you can't go wrong with a bit of knitwear but no one shows that more than Victoria Beckham. There was so much knitwear this season and in so many different styles. My favourite knitwear pieces this season were the knitwear dresses. I love that there was the longer knit dress with cutouts and a shorter one (which is pictured below,) VB has definitely been playing the lengths of her skirts this season.
A Power Coat - Victoria Beckham is a tailoring power house during LFW and the coats really show this off this season. When the models walked the runway in the coats they looked incredibly strong and powerful. I love the coats, the details and the cuts are incredible and show perfectly how important good tailoring is.
Platform Boots - Platform boots would definitely be a shout this season but perhaps look for a pair that you can actually walk in. I like how long the boots are and how they look with the shorter hem lines but as I said, the platform needs to be smaller.
Lumberjack Check - I cannot say I expected to see lumberjack check as part of the VB runway but now that I've seen it, I can't believe she hasn't include it before.
It definitely made all the difference watching this show live on Instagram, it gave me another level of appreciation for the clothes and the show in general. Seeing the clothes in images on Vogue doesn't quite do the runway justice. I will definitely make a more conscious effort to watch the shows live when I can.
